This Is What Happened When I Drank Celery Juice For Two Weeks
Let me preface this post by saying there are few things in life I hate more than celery. Sure spiders, snakes, and cellulite all make the cut, but celery has a special place on my hate list. That's why it took every ounce of strength I had to undergo this crazy experiment.
Let's take a step back: this zany idea came to life when the Medical Medium told me this lime green stalk could do wonders for a troublesome tummy. Supposedly celery packs quite the punch when it comes to digestion, and it has even been crowned "one of the most healing juices we can drink". So since I spent most of my summer battling extreme bloating, I decided to put my foot down and raise a glass.
Here's what happened when I drank 16 oz. of pure, organic celery juice first thing every morning for two weeks:
1. It deflated my belly balloon.
That's right. The saying is true: "A celery juice a day keeps the bloating away." 😜 Celery is a natural diuretic and does a phenom job of flushing toxins and excess water out of the body. And since you're juicing the celery, you remove most of the fiber which makes it even easier to digest.
2. It got things moving along.
... if you know what I mean. 😉 I kid you not, after only a few days of sippin' celery, my bowel movements became so regular that I could almost count down my date with The John to the exact minute. (TMI, I know.) But even science says so too: the natural laxative effect of celery has been known to help relieve constipation. 💩
3. It granted me smooth sailing for the rest of the day.
Not only did that first sip de-bloat me and flush me out, but it also acted like a guardian angel for anything else I ate for the rest of the day (well, within reason). That AM cocktail helped me digest the rest of my meals easier. And I swear this wasn't just some placebo effect. Because according to MindBodyGreen, the discomforts of indigestion, bloating, and even acid reflux are often caused by low stomach acid. Since celery's natural sodium content raises stomach acid, and when drank first thing in the morning, it primes you for easy digestion for the rest of the day.
4. It curbed my cravings.
Okay this one might be a lil' bit in my head, but I swear: once I gulped my greens, I didn't want to chow down on the sweet breakfasts I normally crave. I passed on the breakfast biscuits I regularly turn to and opted for eggs and avocado toast instead. 😲 And I felt great about it too! No FOMO or breakfast remorse: that lil' cup of celery helped me start every day with a winning streak.
5. I actually warmed up to celery sticks.
I'm not saying I was chowing down on ants-on-a-log every day at snack time, but I stopped going out of my way to fish celery bits out of momma's minestrone soup. Baby steps, y'all.
Wanna join the celery craze?
Here's how I did it WITHOUT the help of a juicer:
1. Chop the icky ends off of the celery stalks and wash them thoroughly.
2. Put them in a blender or food processor and add 1/2 cup of water.
3. Blend them until they form a frothy purée.
4. Drain the mixture into a nut milk bag over an empty bowl.
5. Squeeze all of the liquid out of the nut milk bag, until all you have left is the celery "paste".
6. Chill the celery juice and enjoy on ice. I also like to add a swirly straw to make it even more enjoyable. 😜
