This is What Happened When I Did Shrooms for A Week

You read that right. I ate shrooms every day for 7 days in a row last week. But let me stop you right there: don’t go thinkin’ I went off the deep end. I ain’t talkin’ about those crazy magic mushrooms. I’m talking about the fun guys that we sauté and stuff with cheese. (Get it, fun guys...😜)

Now I know what you’re thinking: big deal, Nat… you tossed some Portobellos into your pasta. But that’s where you’re wrong. Because instead, I actually ate 500mg of adaptogenic mushrooms (fancy word for super healthy) every morning and then reaped all the benefits in only one week. Bam!

Mushroom Powder

Let me back up a bit… see, as I was strolling the aisles of Trader Joe’s the other day, I spotted a packet of “Mushroom Hot Cacao Mix”. It immediately stopped me in my tracks, because: 1) I have a radar for hot chocolate of any kind, and 2) this particular breed sounded absolutely repulsive. Obviously I had to try it.

Sure enough, I did and it was surprisingly divine. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I began questioning if I should ever revert back to regular ol’ Swiss Miss again. And then I did a little digging to back my argument, and that’s when I discovered that this mysterious mushroom powder packs quite a punch.

Fast-forward to my birthday, and by some divine coincidence, my sweet sis Jennifer (who conveniently owns a health and wellness store) actually gifted me a tin of this same mushroom powder! So I dove right in and soon after, my world was changed.

Here’s how it all went down.

By definition, these special shrooms are used to promote energy, boost your mood, strengthen immunity, improve sleep, relieve stress, reduce inflammation, regulate blood sugar, fix tummy probz, help with weight loss, protect from cancer, bring world peace, the list goes on… But from my experience, one week of shroom slurpin’ brought me two key results:

1. I became Mr. Rogers. Not kidding y’all, I was hummin’ show tunes and cheesin’ left and right. I was one happy kiddo. Sure, it could’ve been the fact that I had a trip to Cancun coming up, but I genuinely think my outlook on life was a tad bit brighter than usual.

2. I also became the Energizer Bunny. After a glass of this goodness when I first woke up, I wasn’t yawning til’ 10am, I had more pep in my step throughout the day, and my 3 o’clock slump was no more. No RedBull necessary. And that’s because the powder contains Cordyceps, which was used in Chinese medicine thousands of years ago to increase energy. {Fun Fact: in 1993, the Chinese Olympic Women’s Track & Field team experimented with Cordyceps during training, which allowed them to break multiple world records.}

3. Ironically, I also became a Mellow Mushroom. Despite feeling more energized, my mental state was more calm and clear. I felt less stressed, I picked less arguments with bae, and truly was able to get more done at work. I chalk it up to the magical powers of Reishi, which is the mushroom responsible for reducing stress and improving sleep.

And I promise all this wasn’t just in my head. Because like I said earlier, these organic mushrooms are adaptogenic, which means they bring your body back to normalcy through a balancing act. And by nature, aren’t we meant to be happy as clams, buzzing like bees, and cool as cucumbers? All of which the result of balanced hormones.

What does mushroom powder taste like?

I gotta be honest with y’all: it smells like dog food, looks like cinnamon, tastes like… mushrooms, duh. Super appetizing, right? But it’s salvation is that the taste is easy to mask with, well, anything. Pair it with a packet of stevia or chase it with a shot of juice and you’d never know the difference.

{Another Fun Fact: one of the mushrooms in the blend actually grows on the backs of caterpillars. So that could be one reason why it doesn’t taste like rainbows…}

How do you take it?

I’m super vanilla, so I just plop a spoonful into my morning smoothie. But if you’re feelin’ a lil’ crazy, you can toss it into your coffee, juice, lemonade, Gatorade, oatmeal, soup, pudding, pancakes…. you get the idea. It can be mixed into practically ANYTHING. One tip of advice: if you mix it into a drink, heat the mixture up for at least a minute so the powder blends evenly. Trust me, you do not want to gulp a powder clump.

Four Sigmatic

So many mushrooms, so little time.

When I first started shopping for these shrooms, I went into overdrive. Chaga mushroom this, Lion’s Mane mushroom that… it was all pig latin to me! There are literally hundreds of different kinds. Thankfully, my health nut sister Jen steered me towards Four Sigmatic’s Superfood Blend, which is a great entry-level mix. But if you’re looking to step it up a notch and get a bit funky, there are a gagillion different types of mushroom powders. We’re talkin’ coffee mixes, hot cocoa mixes, golden latte mixes, matcha mixes, matcha latte mixes, chai latte mixes, lemonade mixes, and about 20 more kinds I can’t even pronounce. All blended with our favorite fungi.

And if you happen to be in the Charleston area, swing by my favorite health store, Eucalyptus Wellness Co. to snag all kinds of mushrooms goodies (well, the legal kind ofcourse. 😉) They carry three different brands of mushroom powders and will even toss some in a smoothie for you. Just be sure to name drop “NATHLETIX” to get you 15% off your mushroom purchase!
